If you can keep your soil in good heart through summer, your autumn garden is going to be a much easier ride by far. Soil that dries out and looses its mojo is a big mission to repair – do your best to avoid it.
- Keep soil moisture steady – which doesn’t necessarily mean lots of water! Little and often to keep moisture levels right means a lot less water overall, especially when teamed with humus rich, moisture retentive soil.
- Make compost! The future of your garden depends on you keeping fresh compost coming on. Look after your compost piles by not letting them dry out. If they have break them apart, add fresh matter, toss together, rehydrate and cover.
- Check in on your soil and give any crops that need it a side dressing of vermicastings or compost. A lovely boost not only for the plants but also to keep your soil thriving and avoid a hungry autumn.
Steady moisture and steady soil health is the foundation from which steady cropping springs.
